about me

Jared is an accomplished Superadobe builder and an original apprentice with The Mojave Center, an educational non-profit.  He has been instructing and building earthen structures since 2021 throughout the desert southwest. He completed his Permaculture Design Certification at Rancho Mastatal in the Fall of 2021 and these days is particularly concerned with regenerating arid environments. He has a Bachelor’s in Finance from the University of Kentucky, and grew up in southwest Ohio. He currently resides in Orange county, California, where he’s tending a diverse backyard garden and is passionate about rainwater harvesting in both rural and suburban settings alike. When he’s not building domes, Jared does market sales for Sunny Cal Farms, a third-generation family orchard at OC farmer’s markets.

the formula/the manifesto

At this point I've had a hand in more domes than I've kept track of - about 35 or so by my estimates. That is a whole lot more than most people ever build. There is something to the shape of these structures, a simplicity in the amount and variety of materials, . Many people leave an earthbag workshop feeling that, perhaps for the first time in a long time, they were a part of something much bigger than themselves. It is not so much an innovation in architecture as much as it is a returning to the ways of the past and the rhythm of cultures long forgotten.

I have to tip my hat to Nader Khalili and the whole team at the Cal-Earth Institute in Hesperia, California for not only developing and perfecting this technique, but for teaching those willing to learn. I tip my hat to the lineage of natural builders, craftsman, and artisans that have come long before me, and who will continue to answer the call well into the future.

This is what the Earth Design Studio is all about. Sure, it's a funnel of sorts for a holistic set of business ventures - but more than that, it's perhaps the one thing in my life that gives me the most hope for the future - I can't get enough. Finishing another dome feels like the Resistance in Star Wars chiseling away at the Empire...

Choosing to build with earth is very conducive to the idea that economic withdrawal is still our most effective political weapon to enact positive change in the world.

It never ceases to amaze me the quality of people and the energy they bring to build these structures. It simply could not happen without good music and great food too!

For those seeking a generalist with an eye for detail - you've come to the right place. Let's go out and build "the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible" to quote Charles Eisenstein.

When you're ready, shoot me an email or reach out on Instagram/Facebook - in the meantime i'll be at work in the ruins...
